Boer War Siege Mail, 1899-1902: The Philatelic Exhibit

This exhibit addresses a subject we may know, yet the vast majority of us have not seen it presented in a philatelic exhibit. There are many exhibits of the Boer War, but few on the Siege Mail of the Boer War.The Boer War has been intensively studied for more than a hundred years. To the military historian, a siege is measured by troop movements, artillery calibers, and casualty lists. But to the postal historian, a siege is measured by the desperate, ingenious mechanics of human communication under fire.When the War erupted in October 1899, the swift advance of the Boer commandos achieved what the British Empire deemed impossible: it completely isolated imperial outposts, including Ladysmith, Kimberley, and Mafeking. The telegraph lines were cut, the railway tracks torn up, and communication severed, leaving them without a formal postal service. The exhibit reveals the responses and solutions to these postal crises.This exhibit shows letters from all sieges (Mafeking, Kuruman, Kimberly, Wepner, Douglas, and Ladysmith).
